Mothers in war situations
In response to the annual fund-raising drive by 3FM Serious Request, dedicated in 2011 to mothers in war situations, Humanity House in partnership with the Museum Volkenkunde is exhibiting two series of photographs devoted to the theme. On show in Leiden is the series 'The hill that women built' from Andrea Bruce / NOOR; in the exhibition 'Hidden Power – War Mothers', Humanity House is showing work by Yuri Kozyrev, Alixandra Fazzina, Jan Grarup, Andrea Bruce, Stanley Greene and Giancarlo Ceraudo, all of whom are affiliated to NOOR Photo Agency.
Hidden Power – War Mothers
More than ten million mothers are affected by war around the world. Often they have lost everything. They have to flee and are at risk of sexual violence. The fathers have often been killed or are missing. They have to survive without a home, without food, without clear drinking water, and without access to healthcare. They are all on their own in caring for their children.
In times of war, mothers reveal themselves over and over to be the hidden power of families. They ensure a future for their children and for themselves. The photos show mothers in different situations around the world. These are mothers who persevere and demonstrate power, mothers who join together and support one another in times of darkness, mothers who, in spite of everything, value life.
The photographs were taken by the internationally renowned photographers Yuri Kozyrev, Alixandra Fazzina, Jan Grarup, Andrea Bruce, Stanley Greene and Giancarlo Ceraudo, all of whom are affiliated to NOOR Images, an international photography collective and foundation. NOOR wants to contribute to a better understanding of the world by producing independent picture reports that reflect social change in a positive way. They offer insight into human rights or broach other subjects that affect the world.
