Combatting Corruption: A Human Perspective

According to Ban Ki-moon – Secretary-General of the United nation – thirty percent of the development funds fails to reach its final destination due to corruption. Also, a worrisome rise in corruption has been witnessed in Dutch businesses.

Professor Sylvi Bleker-van Eyk refers to corruption as an incurable disease. Efforts to eradicate this fraud have proven futile. It might simply be in our genes. According to Sylvie Bleker, the combat against corruption could be more fruitful if we regard corruption not merely as a legal issue, but rather as a humanitarian issue.  During the lunch meeting she will touch upon the underlying reasons for corruption and reflect on linkages with human rights. After her lecture, there will be a discussion on why it is so difficult to combat corruption. Would stressing the human perspective be helpful in this process? How could this be applied in reality?
