The connections between development and counter-terrorism

The Hague was in for a rude awakening as a march against the Islamic State (IS) and radicalization was disturbed by rock-throwing IS supporters. The Netherlands and the rest of Europe seem to be witnessing a troubling resurgence of radicalization. Many young IS sympathizers from around the world are travelling to Syria or Iraq to join the jihadists.

How can we respond to these developments more effectively? Should development play a role in countering terrorism, and if so, how? As part of the lunchseries, Mark Singleton will address the synergies between development and counter-terrorism and discuss how development and counter-terrorism go hand in hand.

About the speaker

Mark Singleton was instated as the Director of the International Centre for Counter Terrorism The Hague (ICCT) on September 1st, 2014. He is a diplomat with over 25 years’ experience in foreign affairs, development cooperation and security, in Africa, South Asia and the Middle East.
