Freedom Lecture: Zhanna Nemtsova

This years Freedom Lecture will be held by Russian journalist and activist Zhanna Nemtsova. She will speak about her life, her aspirations, and her vision on freedom. How is she battling the Kremlin? How do the mechanisms from the Russian propaganda apparatus work exactly? And is she able to act against it from her residence Bonn?

After the lecture we will talk with Russia expert Huberts Smeets and Russian film programmer Ksenia Gapchenko about propaganda & activism in Russia. Before and after the programme you can join the Amnesty Writing Marathon.

About Zhanna Nemtsova

Zhanna Nemtsova is the daughter of murdered opposition leader Boris Nemtsov. Although there is no direct link between the perpetrators and the Kremlin, Nemtsova holds president Putin personally responsible. She believes that Putin’s smear campaign against the opposition created a political climate in which the murder of her father could take place. Nemtsova continues to fight for an independent investigation.

Six months ago, Nemtsova moved to Bonn. She no longer felt save in Russia after being threatened several times. In Bonn, she works as a journalist for Die Welle and she has founded the Boris Nemtsov Foundation for Freedom. In the spirit of her father she is committed to the fight for democracy and human rights in Russia. She also wrote the book ‘Russland wachrütteln’ (‘Waking up Russia’), released in Germany.

Further with Dutch journalist and historian Huberts Smeets, founder of Raam op Rusland (‘Window on Russia’). From 1990 till 1993 Smeets was correspondent for NRC Handelsblad in the Sovjet Union and Russia. In 2015 he published ‘De wraak van Poetin‘ (‘Putins Revenge’). And Russian film programmer Ksenia Gapchenko. She studied at the Moscow School of Documentary Film and Documentary Theatre and worked as programming director for the Documentary Film Centre in Moscow.
