Lunch meeting with Peter Sawczak (OPCW)

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is the implementing body of the Chemical Weapons Convention, which entered into force in 1997. The OPCW was awarded by the Nobel Peace Prize 2013. In this Bread & Brains Sawczak will focus on Syria and the destroying of chemical weapons. How much progress has been made seven months later? With repeated delays to the process from the Syrian government, there is growing concern that the deadline will not be met.

About the speaker

Peter Sawczak is Head of Government Relations and Political Affairs at the OPCW.  He was previously Senior Adviser on international security to the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs.  Mr Sawczak has extensive experience in arms control issues, having served as Director of Counter-Proliferation at the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and on diplomatic postings to Washington, Brussels and Moscow.
