Protection Challenges in conflict situations

There are currently more than 51 million people worldwide who have been forcibly displaced as a result of conflict, violence and persecution – the highest number since World War II. This situation has only become more grave since, with the outbreak of civil war in South Sudan, the relentless exodus from Syria, the desperate situation in the Central African Republic and the violent conflict currently taking place in Iraq. Volker Türk will speak about the continued importance of refugee protection and elaborate on UNHCR’s call for increased solidarity in light of an unprecedented number of refugee and internally displaced populations.

Dr. Türk is currently based in UNHCR Headquarters in Geneva, and has worked with UNHCR in various parts of the world, including in Malaysia, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Kuwait.
